Wormwood
Wormwood (scientific name Artemisia absinthium) is a tonic historically used to treat worm infestation. Since its discovery, wormwood is also used for liver pathology, bloating, appetite stimulation, and anemia. In Germany, wormwood is approved to treat mild gastrointestinal complaints and is commonly dosed at 1-2 mL of liquid extract two to three times daily.
Adverse effects include worsening gastric or duodenal ulcers, headache, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.
Wormwood should not be taken with anticonvulsant medications and may impact absorption of iron supplements and ascorbic acid. One case study has shown wormwood taken concurrently with warfarin can cause an elevated INR and bleeding.
